Internal wave – eddy interactions

Internal wave – eddy interactions.

near-inertial wave dynamics in the global ocean

Near-inertial waves (NIWs) form a crucial link between atmospheric forcing and oceanic mixing. The magnitude, spatial distribution, and seasonality of NIW energy shape the global distribution of internal wave-driven mixing. Understanding these patterns is therefore critical for improving mixing parameterizations and, ultimately, the fidelity of simulated ocean circulation and heat transport. Despite their importance, the seasonal and spatial variations of NIW energetics in global ocean models remain highly uncertain.
